Tom is in his final year of school. When he finishes Year 12, he wants to work. It’s a big focus for him and very important. To help him reach his goal Tom has ‘Finding and Keeping a Job’ funding in his NDIS plan and is part of Classroom 2 Career, a School Leaver Employment Support (SLES) program.
Classroom 2 Career is a new NDIS school leaver employment support program, in the Sunshine Coast and Rockhampton regions, to help young people with a disability gain skills to prepare them for work or further study.
Tom’s long term goal is to be a chef and in the short-term he’d love to find part-time work in a kitchen while still at school and get an apprenticeship or traineeship next year.
He’s on his way currently completing a Cert II in Cookery at Maroochydore Trade Training centre and once a week working on building his employable skills with Classroom 2 Career Project Officer Greg Poultney.
Tom is not new to our Community Wellbeing programs as he has been connected to our Sunshine Coast team through the Grandparents as Parents (GAP) program for the past four years.
At one of his recent visits to the Sunshine Coast office Tom helped Greg sort out the shed at the East Bank Community Garden and enjoyed picking some flowers for his Nan. Greg says it’s been a pleasure and an honour to see Tom growing into a fine young man.
“He is a hard working young gentleman and whoever ends up employing and working with him will be richer for the experience,” said Greg.
The team are currently seeking work experience opportunities for Tom in the Sunshine Coast Kawana area. If you have any business contacts that could support Tom or other Classroom 2 Career customers on the Sunshine Coast please get in touch: 1300 770 145
