After living with diabetes for most of his life, Andrew faced a major setback when a severe injury led to the amputation of his toe. The long recovery process through the public health system meant months of pain and time away from work, leaving Andrew uncertain about his future.

Despite these obstacles, Andrew was determined to get back on track and reached out to Community Solutions Disability Employment Services (DES) in North Queensland for help. Our dedicated team worked closely with Andrew to assess his skills, interests, and physical capabilities to find a job that suited his abilities and needs. Their personalised approach ensured that he would be placed in a role where he could thrive and contribute meaningfully. In September 2024, he started as a groundsman and attendant at Shannon’s Superwash in Townsville.

Since then, Andrew has thrived in his role, keeping the yard tidy, maintaining the premises and helping customers. His employer also recognised his horticultural background and gave him the opportunity to plant a new garden, a project he’s particularly proud of.

“The rain has really helped keep them happy and healthy,” Andrew said.

Outside of work, Andrew spends his time working on his boat, which he plans to sail after retirement. With steady employment and a strong sense of purpose, he’s back on his feet—both at work and in his community.

A big shoutout to Andrew for his resilience and to our Community Solutions team for their commitment to helping individuals find meaningful, sustainable employment. Their collective efforts have made a significant difference, proving that with determination and support, it is possible to overcome life’s toughest challenges and emerge stronger than ever.
