Finding the Right Support at the Right Time

After more than two years of unemployment, with a large family to support and limited resources, Shane was struggling to find sustainable work and wasn’t sure where to start. That changed when he connected with his Community Solutions’ Workforce Australia mentor, Rose.

Shane was worried his options were limited, due to his age and without a qualification. However, with the right support and encouragement, new opportunities began to open up.

“Rose understood my concerns and encouraged me to try support work. Community Solutions provided funding for my yellow and blue card then arranged an interview with a local support service,” Shane said.

Equipped and Ready for the Right Opportunity

To help Shane get back into the workforce, Rose made sure he had everything he needed to succeed. She enrolled him in two job readiness courses, and organised a timber industry orientation. Community Solutions also paid for his first aid and CPR training, to make sure he was set up for potential roles in the support work sector.

“Community Solutions has provided a lot of support with things like licence renewals, interview clothes and work clothes,” Shane said.

“The Job Ready program was by far the most useful.”

Rose took the time to understand what Shane needed, so when the right opportunity came along, he was ready and confident to take it on.

Landing the Right Role

While Shane had explored the idea of becoming a support worker and attended an interview, another opportunity caught his eye at Fresh & Save. He spotted the job on Seek and applied immediately.

After two months with no response, Shane nearly gave up hope. Then he was called in for a second in-store interview.

“I had given up on the role but was contacted for a second in-store interview which was successful. I was relieved, nervous and grateful,” Shane said.

To support his transition into the new role, Community Solutions supported the renewal of Shane’s forklift licence, an essential qualification that has helped him become a valuable part of the team.

A Fresh Start for the Whole Family

Getting back into employment has meant more than just a paycheck. Shane explained it has helped him take control back of his life.

“Being able to plan again is amazing. I’m walking a little taller, and I can say yes to my wife and kids more now.”

Looking back, Shane is most proud of being open to change. He tried new ideas, showed up for workshops, and trusted the process and advice about job seeking and implementing them.

Shane’s Advice for Others on the Same Path

With the right support and a willingness to try new things, Shane is proof that it’s possible to turn things around.

“If you genuinely want work, put your hand up for any help offered, for example: courses, job clubs, licensing, qualifications. It will eventually click, and you’ll hit the ground running,” Shane said.

“Without hesitation, Community Solutions will invest time, resources, and will manage your obligations fairly to get the work you want.”
