A life-changing career move

Tina has always been passionate about helping others, but living with Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD) made it challenging to find a career that supported both her learning needs and personal growth.

That all changed when she enrolled in a Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) through Community Solutions, via the Skilling Queenslanders for Work (SQW) program and Axiom College. What began as a training program soon became a career she loves.

“As part of my training, I started a placement at Endeavour Foundation – Business Solutions in Slade Point, where I was thrilled to be offered a permanent position,” Tina said.

This opportunity not only changed her career but also had a profound impact on her self-belief and sense of belonging.

Finding purpose and belonging

For Tina, working in disability support is more than just a job, it’s a passion.

“This journey has been life changing. I have built strong bonds with my colleagues and feel a genuine sense of belonging,” Tina said.

Her work has also led to a noticeable transformation in her personal life. “My friends and family have noticed a positive change in me, which means the world to me,” Tina expressed.

A mother’s journey, and daughter’s inspiration

Tina’s journey has had a ripple effect beyond her own success, it has inspired her daughter, AJ.

“My daughter, AJ, struggles with ADHD and faces challenges in a traditional classroom setting. Seeing how much I gained from the Skilling Queenslanders for Work (SQW) program, I encouraged her to enrol in the 2025 intake, and she started on March 3rd,” Tina said.

“Knowing that my journey has had a ripple effect on my family makes this experience even more rewarding,” Tina added.

Overcoming barriers and building confidence

Tina once found it difficult to secure a career that supported her needs and personal growth, but the Skilling Queenslanders for Work (SQW) program provided her with the tools to succeed.

“When I started the program, I was anxious and reserved,” Tina said. “But after 16 weeks of training, I graduated with new friendships, improved social skills, and a renewed sense of confidence.”

The program’s wraparound support helped Tina and others overcome barriers like financial constraints, learning difficulties, and cultural differences.

The power of community and hands-on learning

Tina’s class was made up of 18 adults from diverse backgrounds, ranging from 18 to 48 years old, all with the shared goal of becoming support workers.

“From the first few weeks, we built strong bonds. Study groups and group chats formed, making learning enjoyable,” Tina said.

Attending class four days a week for 16 weeks was a challenge, but the hands-on learning approach was exactly what she needed. Industry experts provided real-world insights, and the well-structured materials kept students engaged.

“The hands-on learning approach was exactly what I needed,” Tina said.

Support that makes a difference

Tina credits much of her success to the guidance and mentorship she received during her training.

“I was incredibly fortunate to have the support of my Skilling Queenslanders for Work Project Coordinator, Cindy, and my trainer, Lynne,” Tina said.

“Cindy not only guided us academically but also provided emotional support. She shared stories of Torres Strait Islander culture, enriching our learning experience.”

Even after finishing her training, Cindy continues to support Tina and her classmates.

“Her dedication has inspired me to be the same kind of role model and mentor for others in my new career.”

A bright future in disability support

Tina’s journey from student to support worker, and inspiration to her daughter AJ is an inspiring testament to the power of quality training, mentorship, and resilience.

“I am beyond grateful for this journey and excited for what’s to come!” Tina said.
