Life has a way of throwing unexpected challenges our way, and for 63-year-old Sally Mundy, it was a redundancy that led her to embark on a remarkable journey. After dedicating several years to administrative roles, Sally found herself facing rejection after rejection in her job search. However, she chose to turn adversity into opportunity, taking a leap of faith into an unfamiliar field—support work. Sally’s inspiring transition and determination, along with support from the Community Solutions Workforce Australia team paved the way for a new chapter in her life.
Having honed her skills in administration while working at Queensland Health and Riverside Christian College, Sally believed she had a secure career path. But, life had other plans for her. The redundancy left her feeling disheartened and uncertain about her future. Despite her experience, Sally faced constant rejection when applying for administrative roles, which left her questioning her worth and abilities.
Re-evaluating her situation, Sally realised that clinging to the familiar might not be the best option. With a mortgage to pay and a desire to continue working, she decided to explore new avenues and try her hand at support work. This big decision marked the beginning of a transformational phase in her life.
Support work is a rapidly growing market on the Fraser Coast, where Sally lives. Undeterred by her lack of experience in this field, she began applying for entry-level positions. Eventually, she stumbled upon a traineeship opportunity in Individual Support with Maryborough Aged Care, sparking her enthusiasm. However, her past qualifications in an unrelated field posed a challenge.
Having found Community Solutions’ Mentor, Rose, Sally’s determination was met with support.
Rose was unwilling to accept Sally’s initial rejection and took the matter into her own hands and sought help from Maryborough Aged Care’s HR specialist, Jessie. Together, they approached Jill Rimmer, the traineeship’s advertising agent, to discuss Sally’s qualifications and potential.
“[Sally] is a real inspiration to those around her with her positive go-getting attitude. She is a delight to everyone she meets and looks forward to completing her studies and making a difference within the community.” Rose said.
Through Rose, Jessie, and Jill’s combined efforts, Sally’s previous qualifications were reassessed in a new light. It became evident that her skills from the administrative world could complement and enhance her capabilities as a support worker. The traineeship’s door, once closed, was now open to Sally, who embraced the opportunity with gratitude and determination.
Today, Sally thrives in her new role as a support worker in training at Maryborough Aged Care. She cannot thank Rose and the team enough.
“Community Solutions Maryborough always goes above and beyond to be helpful, supportive, and friendly and keeps you informed and up to date with what you need to know.
“Rose is absolutely awesome and honestly, she is one of the most helpful, kind and supportive people I have ever had the pleasure to meet! I could not have asked for better help and understanding. I am highly grateful!” Sally said.
Sally’s positive and go-getting attitude is an inspiration to those around her. Colleagues and residents alike describe her as a delight to be around, showcasing the importance of a passion-driven career shift.
With her studies underway, Sally eagerly anticipates the day she can make a significant difference within her community as a qualified support worker. Her journey reminds us that it is never too late to embark on a new path and that with the right support and self-belief, we can overcome any obstacle.
Sally Mundy’s story is a testament to the power of embracing change and pursuing one’s passion, regardless of age or background. By stepping away from the familiar and taking a leap of faith, she found fulfillment and purpose in support work.
