It’s not every day that you get to celebrate a career as remarkable and inspiring as Des Ryan’s. After an extraordinary tenure spanning nearly three decades with Community Solutions, Des officially retired in December 2024, leaving behind a legacy that is as impactful as it is heartfelt. His unwavering commitment to advocacy, leadership, and community-building has been nothing short of exceptional, and his contributions will be remembered for years to come.
Des began his journey with Community Employment Options in April 1996, which later merged with Community Solutions. From the moment he joined, it was clear that his passion for creating a better world for people with disabilities would be the cornerstone of his career. Through his tireless efforts, he has positively impacted countless lives, not only within our organisation but across Central Queensland and beyond.
Over the years, Des wore many hats. Whether he was helping resolve issues as a Case Coordinator, driving innovation in IT roles, or shining as our Community Relations Ambassador in Rockhampton, Des gave 110% to everything he did. He also found time to lead community projects like the iconic ‘Accessible Pub Crawl,’ youth suicide prevention events, and the Rockhampton River Run.
Of course, Des’s efforts didn’t go unnoticed. He’s racked up some impressive accolades, including an Order of Australia, a commemorative medal from Disability Employment Australia (DES), two Rotary Paul Harris Fellow awards, and recognition as a Companion of Central Queensland University.
To honour Des and his remarkable achievements, we hosted a memorable retirement celebration at the Rockhampton office. The event brought together colleagues, friends, and community members, all eager to express their gratitude for the countless ways Des has enriched their lives. It was an evening filled with heartfelt stories, laughter, and an overwhelming sense of appreciation for a man who has given so much to so many.
As Des embarks on this new chapter of his life, we extend our deepest gratitude for everything he has done for Community Solutions and the broader community. His passion, dedication, and unwavering spirit has left a lasting mark, and while his presence will be sorely missed, his legacy will continue to inspire us all.
Here’s to a happy, well-earned retirement, Des – you’ve truly earned it. May the next phase of your journey be as fulfilling and impactful as the incredible career you’ve built.
