What Are Wage Subsidies?

Wage subsidies are payments made to employers who hire eligible jobseekers through Workforce Australia. They are designed to:

  • Offset initial wage and onboarding costs
  • Reduce hiring risk
  • Support sustainable, long-term employment

Wage subsidies are fully funded by the Australian Government and are available across a wide range of industries and roles.

Subsidy amounts, eligibility, and payment structures vary depending on the job seeker and role.

How Wage Subsidies Can Benefit Your Business

Wage subsidies can help your business by:

  • Reducing the upfront cost of taking on a new employee
  • Supporting productivity while new staff settle into their role
  • Giving you confidence to grow your workforce
  • Creating long-term employment outcomes, not short-term placements

They are commonly used by employers to support business growth, fill skill gaps, and build a more stable workforce.

Who Can Access Wage Subsidies?

Eligibility is assessed on a case-by-case basis. Both the business and the job seeker must meet certain requirements.

Business eligibility may include:

  • A current Australian Business Number (ABN)
  • An offer of ongoing employment (full-time, part-time, or eligible casual roles)
  • Compliance with workplace and employment standards
  • No prior wage subsidy claimed for the same role

Job seeker eligibility may include:

  • Registration with Workforce Australia
  • People who are long-term unemployed
  • Young jobseekers
  • Mature-age workers
  • First Nations Australians
  • Principal carer parents
  • Other eligible participant groups

Not all roles or jobseekers will qualify. We can guide you through the eligibility process.
