Compass Group employs around 11,000 people to deliver support services for a range of industries across Australia. For their business, providing employment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders is a big focus.

‘Our business is diverse and so are our people.’ – Compass Group

Compass Group had a number of vacant utility roles in Mackay. So, they decided to engage Community Solutions to recruit local Indigenous job seekers.

“It’s important to align ourselves to jobactive service providers that understand what we need and are able to provide the right candidates for the services we offer.” Said Emily Tanna, Compass Group’s Diversity and Inclusion Training and Employment Coordinator.

Finding 10 Mackay job seekers ready to work

The Mackay region is a focus area for Compass Group, especially when it comes to providing employment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

Previously, they have had challenges with finding job seekers that could work remotely or were work ready.

“We’ve struggled to fill the roles.” Said Emily. “With these roles, there are many hoops to jump through such as site requirements, medical, drug and alcohol screening.”

However, Compass Group had 10 roles to fill and needed support with finding local job seekers.

“Our recruitment goal was to find 10 quality candidates, with priority given to Indigenous people.”

Supporting Indigenous employment

With vacant roles at two mines in Mackay, Rebecca Rintoul Community Solutions Employment Consultant called Emily to discuss how they could work together to support local job seekers.

From there, Rebecca and Community Solutions team worked closely with Compass Group on their needs and goals. As a result, they offered the 10 roles to Community Solutions to fill.

“It made me nervous as I wouldn’t usually offer so many vacancies to just one jobactive provider knowing it can be really hard to place so many roles with Indigenous job seekers.”

Emily explains that Rebecca’s genuine passion for people, focus on Indigenous employment and honest and open communication eased her nerves.

“Rebecca took all the information away. Not long after, she presented me with many quality candidates who I felt all would be suited to our business.”

Community Solutions currently has 1,570 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander job seekers looking for work. So, every opportunity makes a difference.

Meeting Compass Group’s recruitment goals

Our team in Mackay quickly went out to their network of local job seekers. As such, they worked through Compass Group’s criteria and ended up with nine suited to the roles.

“We were able to receive nine candidates which is fantastic. I interviewed all of them and was really impressed by everyone.” Said Emily.

As a result, all of the job seekers progressed to the next level of the recruitment process.

The team were able to find the right job seekers by working through Compass Group’s goals and job requirements, explained Hayley Pinsent, Community Solutions Business Development Leader.

“We really came together, pulled job seekers in and worked with Compass Group to upskill them and help them go through any medical screenings.” Said Hayley.

Now, Compass Group has seven new valued employees.

“Would I work with Community Solutions again? In a heartbeat.” Said Emily.

By working with Compass Group, we’ve been able to further support Indigenous job seekers to find work.
